The Location

With an enviable reputation as the sunniest part of New Zealand, the Nelson/Tasman region is a perfect destination for both the overseas and out-of-town visitor.

If you're looking for rest, and relaxation or something more energetic, you are literally spoilt for choice.

Surrounded by three National parks, unspoilt beaches, ancient rainforests and spectacular mountains, opportunites for outdoor activities abound. Renowned as a centre for artisans, the city of Nelson, and surrounding districts is peppered with close to 400 sculptors, potters, artisan jewellers, woodworkers, and artists.

Then there is the wine.

For over 35 years, Nelson has been quietly producing some of New Zealand's finest wines. Names like Neudorf, Greenhough, Siefried and Waimea are just some of the pioneer producers that have given the region a worldwide reputation for fine aromatic wines. Since 2014 Windhover Estate - of which THE WATERS is part of - has been producing Grüner Veltliner - a delightful experience at your dinner table.

In recent years, a surprising number of micro-breweries have emerged in the region to complement the established wine scene. The region, still famous for its hop growing, is now home to some of New Zealand's most awarded, craft brewed beer.

Just 20 minutes to the north is Kaiteriteri, the famous sweeping bay and beach that attracts visitors from around the world. Tucked just south of the Abel Tasman national park, it is the base for short day trips, walks or extended kayak or hiking expeditions into the aqua-blue bays and lagoons of one of New Zealands most stunning coast-lines.

Explore the vineyards, stroll along the beaches, relax with a day-spa, massage or reflexology session, or explore the artisans workshops and galleries.

Just 30 minutes from the Waters, Nelson is a small, yet vibrant city, with trendy cafés, boutiques and a thriving Saturday craft market. The list goes on and on. For more ideas for things to do, check out our pick of the best of the region.
